Sporting and SJ State Women's Soccer Partner for Player Development

Santa Clara Sporting is excited to announce a newly formed partnership with the San Jose State Women's Soccer Program to further develop female soccer players interested in improving their game and/or playing at the collegiate level. Lauren Hanson (New SJ State Women's Head Coach), Luis Azevedo (SC Sporting Sports Director & Board Member), Veronica Zapeda Cashman (SC Sporting Coach and Santa Clara Bronco alumni), and Gabe Foo met together at the Sporting clubhouse to formalize a player development program and relationship between both organizations. Program elements include but are not limited to:

  • Monthly Player technical and tactical clinics run by SJSU Coaches & Players
  • SJSU guest coaching at SC Sporting Team training sessions
  • College Recruitment Seminars
  • SJSU Coaches may coach a few SC Sporting teams

Lauren Hanson is a winner of the NCAA Women's College Cup championships as a coach and player, and was made the sixth head women's soccer coach at San José State University. Hanson won both of her NCAA Women's Cup championships with the University of Portland. In 2005, she was an assistant coach with the Pilots and in 2002, and was the team captain of Portland's championship team. During her youth soccer career she played on the U18 and U21 US National Team along with SC Sporting Coach Veronica Zapeda Cashman.

In related news, the new San Jose State Men's Program Coach Simon also met to build a relationship with Santa Clara Sporting on the boys side of the program.
