The Santa Clara Sporting ’97 Girls finished the 2009 Mustang Stampede Tournament last weekend as Finalists in the U12 Premier Division. The U12 Sporting Girls marched through bracket play with consistent play with a 2-0 win over Real Colorado, a 4-0 win over Santa Rosa United freeze, and tied San Diego Surf White 2-2. They won their QuarterFinal game 2-1 over Beach FC 97, then defeated Carlsbad Lightening Red 2-1 in the Semi-Finals.

The U12 Girls went undefeated into the quarter finals, where they met a very physical Beach team from Southern California.  The Sporting girls got out to a 2 - 0 lead in the first half.  The Beach girls came out hard in the and two Sporting girls had to be carried off the field.  Despite the injuries, the girls held on for the 2-1 win to advance to the semis.  In the semis the girls faced a very talented Carlsbad Lighting team.  Sporting got out to an early 1-0 lead with a great header goal off a corner.  In the second half, Carlsbad got the equalizer fairly early.  Despite several chances late in the second half the Sporting girls could not put one in the net at the end of regulation.  The girls came out fast and furious in the golden goal overtime and put the game winner in the back of the net in the first 25 seconds of OT.  In the finals, the girls faced Surf White, the team that they had already tied in group play.  The girls gave it everything they had to get to the finals, but with many players carrying injuries into the 6th game of the weekend and the 100 plus degrees of the turf, there was nothing left. The girls lost to determined Surf White. Congratulations to the U12 Girls, Santa Clara Sporting Green for making it to the finals of Northern California’s biggest, most competitive, girls tournament!

Congratulations to all the players, coaches and families. Check-out all the great action photos by Ken N.
