The Santa Clara Sporting ’97 Girls Green Team wrote themselves into the club’s history books today by winning the 2010 CYSA State Cup Championship, and becoming the first girls team to ever win the Cal-North title for Santa Clara Sporting! The Sporting ’97 Girls won the U12 Girls State title with a 5-0 victory over the Modesto Ajax United Team. The girls dominated their opponents throughout the month long tournament; in six games they scored 28 goals and only let 2 into their net. The team opened the State Cup Tournament with three bracket games back on January 30th and 31st; they crushed Central Valley Mercury White 3-0, Fresno Metro Monarchs 6-1, and Redwood Stanford Storm 4-0. Next up was their Quarter-Final game where they overwhelmed the El Dorado United Eclipse with a 7-0 win. On February 13th, they won their Semi-Final match and beat the Central Valley Mercury White Team 3-1, and today they walked away with the championship trophy. "The girls were very motivated at the beginning of the tournament when they set their goal to become the first girls Sporting team to win the title," said Jim Lawrence, team coach.
The State Cup title gives the team an automatic berth to compete in the 2010 Far West Regional Tournament held in New Mexico from June 21-27th.
Congratulations to all the players, coaches and parents for the record breaking accomplishment!
