2010 College Surf Cup Finalists in the U16 Super Group
The Sporting 94’s finished the College Surf Cup Tournament as Finalists in the U16 boys Super Group with four wins, and one loss in the championship game. The boys scored 8 goals and only let in one during the entire tournament. Sporting went undefeated in bracket play with: a 3-0 win over the San Diego Surf White Team; overwhelmed the Westsound FC Team (ranked #3 in Washington) with a 4-0 victory, then beat the Union Independiente Team (ranked #6 in SoCal) in a tight 1-0 game with 10 players on the field in the second half after a player was shown a red card. Santa Clara faced the Mexicas FC (Texas State Cup champions & Region III Far West Regional Finalists) in their Semi-final match and won that game 1-0. The 94’s were on a roll with four wins and four shut-outs going into the Championship match.
The U16 Finals were a rematch of last year’s Northern California State Cup Finals between Sporting and PAC Tigres. The fact that two NorCal Teams were playing at Surf Cup in the Finals was an amazing statement about the quality of these two teams. Sporting played into the wind during the first half, and had more scoring chances then PAC but neither team could score a goal. During the second half PAC found the one winning goal, while Santa Clara pressed-on trying to tie the game but ran out of time. The team has now finished their first two Surf Cup Tournaments as Finalists and Semi-finalists. The team is taking a break for high school soccer and will regroup in March to compete in the CYSA and NorCal State Cup Tournaments. Congratulations to the players, coaches and parents. Thanks to the club for their support!
