The Santa Clara Sporting 98 Girls Green Team won their first Cal-North State Cup Championship last weekend with an exciting 2-1 win in overtime over the Lamorinda United Team. The team played five games in the U17 age group and kept a clean sheet not allowing any goals into their net until the championship game. In the championship match, Sporting and Lamorinda exchanged attacking goal scoring threats during the first half, then Lamorinda was able to get on the score board first when they capitalized on a defensive error by Santa Clara. The first half ended with Sporting down a goal, but both teams play each other 3-4 times during the season, and the Sporting girls had a track record of scoring second half goals against Lamorinda. The 98 girls first tied the game with 22 minutes left on a free kick. Neither team could find the winning goal in regulation play, and the winning golden goal finally came about 12 minutes into the first overtime period.
The team will make their first appearance at the Far West Regional Tournament in June out in Boise, Idaho.
