3 Sporting '99 Teams Crowned NorCal State Cup Champs

'99 Boys & Girls Green Teams win NorCal & Cal-North State Cup Titles

The Santa Clara Sporting 99b Green and 99g Green teams doubled their State Cup trophy case with both team winning the 2013-14 Cal-North State Cup and NorCal Premier State Cup titles last week.  

Santa Clara Sporting 99b Green Team beat Monarcas Academy 3-2 in a come-from-behind win in the State Championship match on May 10th at the Mary Grogan Community Park. With the wind in the first half, Monarcas Academy got on the board early on a goal from Aron Navarrette in the 18th minute. Just three minutes later Luis Barbontin doubled the lead for Monarcas. In the 2nd half the momentum began to shift when Victor Romero scored for Sporting to cut the Monarcas lead to 2-1 in the 43rd minute. Sporting continued to pressure the Monarcas backline and finally leveled the score in the 65th minute when Angel Lopez finished off a rebound in front of the goal. Sporting were not finished as they could smell a State Championship. The winner came in the final minute, on a fantastic run by Cesar Ponce-Borunda who slipped a ball past the Monarcas keeper and despite a fantastic effort from a Monarcas defender the ball trickled into the net. Seconds later, the referee blew for time and Santa Clara Sporting celebrated as State Champions.

Santa Clara Sporting 99g Green Team used two second half goals to defeat Davis Legacy Milllennium in the 2013-14 State Championship match on May 10th at the Mary Grogan Community Park. In the first half, neither team created many scoring chances Early in the second half the pace of the game began to pick up with both teams starting to create scoring chances. In the 55th minute, a nice finish from Chloe Cacoyannis put Sporting ahead 1-0. Davis Legacy pressed hard for the equalizer and almost tied the score with three minutes to go but were denied by an excellent save by Sporting Goalkeeper Alexis Aguilar. With Davis pressing hard, attempting to tie the score, Sophia Mendoza scored on the counter in the final minute to clinch the State Title for Sporting. 

The Santa Clara Sporting 99g Black Team won the NorCalPreSoccer Bronze State Cup with their 2-1 win over the Yuba Sutter FC United Team.
