The Santa Clara Sporting 97 Girls Green Team added another milestone to their record book when they won the 2011 US Club Soccer National Championship in the U13 Super Group out in Boise, Idaho. The 97 Green team had to dig deep in their reserves to win the National title, and it all started in their opening match when the team competed against the Usonian 97 Girls team in extreme heat without any subs. The Santa Clara team was missing four key players who were busy trying-out for the Region IV ODP Team in Moscow, Idaho. It was critical for those ODP players to participate in the Regional ODP Camp, but it left the 97 girls team to play their first game with only 11 players. The girls were able to eek-out a 2-2 tie to start their run for the National Cup.
On the second day, they defeated the Eastside 97 Red team from Washington with a close 2-1 score. The following day, they beat the NWN 97G team in another close game ending in a 1-0 victory. With an undefeated tournament record, the team earned a spot to play in the Finals, and had to play a rematch against the Eastside 97 Red team. Sporting scored first in the Championship match, but Eastside was awarded a penalty kick which they converted to tie the game 1-1. With only a few minutes left in regulation play, Sporting got a free kick that gave the team a chance to score the winning goal. Santa Clara convertes the opportunity into a winning goal with a beautiful free kick met by a charging forward who lept out of the air to head the ball past the Eastside goalie. Check-out the video to catch the action!
The Sporting 97G team are the first girls team in the club’s history to win a National Championship and a State Cup Championship!
Congratulations to the coaches, players and parents!
