The Santa Clara Sporting 98 Boys Green Team won the 2014 College Surf Cup U16 Championship last weekend in San Diego. The boys drew 0-0 against the Olympia FC Team (Ranked 4th in Texas) to open their Surf Cup run, then defeated the Heat FC 99 NPL Team from Nevada with a 2-0 score. The '98s won their third game by a score of 2-1 over the United FC B98 Gold Team from Southern California. Winning their bracket gave the team an added boost of confidence as they headed into their semi-final game against the California Rush Saldana Team from Southern California. Cal Rush were semi-finalists in the USCS West Regional Tournament back in June and a strong opponent, but Santa Clara fought a tough battle and won the game 2-1 to earn a spot in the Finals.
Sporting would face their third Southern California opponent in the Championship Match; the LA Premier FC White Team which soundly beat Diablo FC, Sacramento United and Albion SC with a 3-1 score in each game to earn their spot in the Final. Sporting won the game 2-1 and brought the prestigous College Surf Cup trophy back to Northern California. Congratulations to all the players and Coaches.
