Sporting '93 Girls & '94 Boys are Finalists at CYSA North vs. South Championships

The Central Valley ChiliPeppers and the Santa Clara Sporting ’94 Boys led the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 CYSA North vs. South Championships.

The Santa Clara Sporting Team ’94 Boys, ’93 Girls Green, ’93 Boys, and ’92 Boys teams competed last weekend at the CYSA North vs. South Tournament held in Elk Grove near Sacramento. The CYSA North vs. South Tournament brings together the top-2 teams from the U15-U19 State Premier Division in the CCSL (Northern California) and the Coast Soccer League (Southern California) to compete for the California title. Both the Coast Soccer League and the CCSL provide a state wide soccer league that allow the best teams to compete in the State Premier Divisions across district borders.

All four Santa Clara Sporting teams qualified to compete in the North vs. South Tournament after finishing 1st or 2nd in their age group in the State Premier Division of the new CYSA Cal-Soccer League. In fact, 4 of the 10 teams from Cal-North were from Santa Clara Sporting.

The ’92 Boys (U18) won the Fall Season, while the ’93 Boys (U17) actually played-up all in the U18 group and finished 2nd overall.  The ’93 Girls (U17) and the ’94 Boys (U16) both finished second overall in the State Premier League, and all four teams represented Northern California in the 9th Annual CYSA North vs. South Tournament.

Santa Clara Sporting ’93 Girls Green Team
The ’93 Girls were Finalists at the North vs. South Tournament behind the Slammers Team from SoCal in the U17 Girls Division.  The Sporting girls tied Slammers 1-1 in their first game on Saturday, then won their second game 2-0 over the LA Legends FC Team from SoCal. The win and tie on Saturday pushed the team into the Championship game on Sunday, which became a rematch with the Slammers Team. Santa Clara and Slammers fought a tough battle on Sunday in the championship game, but the SoCal Team was just too strong and won the game 3-0 over Sporting. It was a good showing by the Sporting ’93 Girls who continue to show why they are one of the top teams in their age group. More action photos from Bob Empasis

Santa Clara Sporting ’92 Boys Team
The ’92 Boys finished the North vs. South Tournament in 3rd place overall. The ’92s and the ’93 Boys Team both represented Cal-North in the tournament, and battled the LA Legends and the United FC Black Teams in the Boys U19 Age Group.  The Sporting ’92s finished the weekend with two draws; a 0-0 tie against eventual tournament winners United FC Black, and a 3-3 tie against the LA Legends.

The ’93 Boys
held their own playing-up a year, and finished the tournament with a 1-1 tie against United FC Black, and a 0-1 loss to LA Legends.  Both games were closely fought at an incredibly fast pace.

The ’94 Boys were Finalists in the U16 age group. They won their first game 2-1 over the South Bay Force Team, then tied Arsenal FC 3-3 in a dramatic and fierce come-from-behind battle. The win and tie on Saturday placed the Sporting 94s on top of the bracket, and gave them a berth to play for the championship title against South Bay Force again.  In the Championship match, South Bay Force scored 2 goals in the first half to lead the game at half-time. Sporting found their first goal about 15 minutes into the second half, then equalized the game with a second goal minutes later. But South Bay Force responded quickly after Santa Clara scored to take the lead again 3-2, and eventually scored a forth goal to secure the game when Sporting kept pushing numbers forward to try and tie the game a second time.

It was a great showing by Santa Clara Sporting. Congratulations to all the teams!
