Santa Clara Sporting 94 Team finished the Cerritos Memorial Challenge Cup as Semifinalists after another intense battle against the Chula Vista Rangers for the second day in a row. The Rangers came-out strong in the first half and were accidentally gifted with an own-goal by Sporting, then took a wide lead when Chula Vista converted a corner kick to end the first half with a 2-0 lead. Sporting had dug themselves into a hole, but the team changed-up their formation and came-out playing their game, and found their first goal about 5 minutes into the second half with a nice crossing ball from that was headed into the back of the Rangers net. About 10 minutes later, Santa Clara would level the game when a 25 yard shot ripped into the back of the Rangers net again. Now the game was tied at 2-2. The game looked like it was headed to a penalty kick shoot-out but Chula Vista would net their third goal minutes before the game ended. Both team played their hearts-out and earned a lot of respect for each other. This was clearly a game that should have been played for the championship title.
The Santa Clara Sporting 94 team will next compete in the US Club Regional Tournament in June, the Placer College Showcase and Surf Cup tournaments in July, and the Sporting Invitational and Mustang Stampede tournaments in August.
