The Sporting ’93 Girls finished the 2009 SoCal Blues Cup Tournament as Finalists after loosing to the Surf White Team from San Diego in a penalty kick shoot-out on September 7th. Surf White is the current US National Champions; the #1 Ranked Team in the US in the U16 Girls Age Group. Santa Clara tied in their first bracket game 2-2 against the Las Vegas Premier Team, then defeated Chelsea FC 2-1 Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, they drew another tie against CZ Elite FC Girls with a 0-0 score. The win and 2 draws advanced them out of bracket play as they were tied on points with Las Vegas. Sporting pounded the SC Del SOl 94 White Team by a score of 3-0 in QuarterFinals, then advanced to the SemiFinals against Sereno 94 Girls White Team. The girls came-out strong and took control of the game; US National Team member Mariana Galvin scored both goals to lift the team 2-0 over Sereno and send the team into the Championship game.
The Championship game was a real battle between Sporting and San Diego Surf. Neither team could score during regulation play, or the double overtime periods. The US National Champs & Surf Cup Champ team took the upper hand during the second overtime period and had four 1v1 chances against Lindsay Mewes/Sporting goalie, but Lindsay repeatedly turned their attacks and shots away to send the game into a penalty kick shoot-out. The game got very physical as well, and Sporting lost four players due to injury. During the penalty kick shoot-out, Mewes blocked one of the PKs, but Sporting missed three and the game went to San Diego by a score of 3-2. It was a great showing by Sporting and NorCal. Congratulations to all the players and coaches!
